Hot: Keith Giffen Legionnaires!

Keith Giffen probably did more for the "look" of the later Bronze Age Legion of Super-Heroes than any other illustrator. In the same way that Dave Cockrum and Mike Grell "owned" the Legion in the Seventies, Giffen owned them in the Eighties. He re-designed half a dozen costumes during his first stint with the group, then re-designed them all again when he came back to the book a few years later, and then re-designed them all *again* when he was doing the Five Years Later book.

So here are a few of Giffen's myriad costume designs for our favorite Legionnaires...!

 Giffen designed Invisible Kid II
 (Legion v2 #290)

Giffen also designed the albino White Witch
(Legion v2 #291)

Giffen re-costumed Colossal Boy, Element Lad, Timber Wolf, and others
(Legion v2 #301)

Giffen re-re-designed the entire Legion after he came back...!
That's Wildfire, Ultra Boy, and Dawnstar here
(Legion v3 #54)

  1. I always thought it showed just how clueless about people Brainy was that he remodeled Computo after Validus, so we had two Legionnaire-killer monsters combined into one, and running the HQ.

  2. Good point. Brainy sure could be dense at times.

  3. I understand I’m probably in a tiny minority but I really liked the late 80s Giffen costumes from the end of the Baxter run. Especially Phantom Girl.
